A former silver mining camp in southwestern Colorado, Telluride today is really two towns in one. The official town of Telluride is a National Historic Landmark District. Just eight blocks wide and 12 blocks long, this “Old West” town is tucked into a narrow canyon that’s surrounded by 13,000- and 14,000-foot mountain peaks. It’s the perfect place to shop at local boutiques, browse art galleries and enjoy great dining choices.

Telluride’s second hub is Mountain Village, which was founded in 1987 and today is focused on green practices and sustainable growth. Located above the valley floor at an elevation of 9,500 feet, Mountain Village is the gateway to the Telluride Ski Resort. Conde Nast Traveler named it the number one ski resort in North America for its epic powder and crowd-free runs.

No matter what your plans are and which town you’re planning on exploring, it’s easy to go back and forth. Just hop on Telluride’s free gondola which travels between Telluride and Mountain Village at regular intervals (hours vary by season). In winter, you can easily attach your skis or snowboard to your gondola car. In summer, they’re reconfigured to accept mountain bikes. But no matter what time of year you visit, you’re sure to enjoy the views. The 13-minute ride offers spectacular views from 10,500 feet. Spot aspen-covered hillsides, peaceful waterfalls and even Utah’s La Sal range on a clear day.
