Tucked along the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is an outdoor lover’s paradise and a popular second home destination. Less than an hour from Reno and about two hours from Sacramento, the Lake Tahoe region is divided into two main areas: North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe, with the crystal-clear lake in the middle. Lake Tahoe is the second-deepest lake in the United States, at a depth of 1,645 feet.

In North Tahoe, you’ll find the lakeside towns of Kings Beach and Incline Village. It’s also where you’ll discover Tahoe City, situated on the Truckee River and a popular outpost for kayakers in the summer. When the winter snow rolls in, North Lake Tahoe is where you’ll find an incredible 12 downhill ski resorts, including Squaw Valley, Northstar, Alpine Meadows and Diamond Peak.

Whereas North Lake Tahoe has a more outdoorsy vibe, the south shore is the tourism center of Lake Tahoe, boasting resorts, upscale hotels, casinos, shopping and festivals.

Heavenly, Tahoe’s largest ski resort, is the closest to the south shore and offers incredible views from a 2.4-mile gondola run. Planning on spending your summer months in South Lake Tahoe? There’s plenty to do: hiking to local waterfalls, rafting the south fork of the American River and hitting the beach.
