With quaint fishing villages, historic neighborhoods, rugged coastlines and old lighthouses, Coastal Maine looks like something straight out of a scenic jigsaw puzzle. The coastal town of Kennebunkport is known as the summer getaway of former president George H.W. Bush and his family, but it offers plenty to do, even for those of us who don’t travel with a Secret Service detail.

Kennebunkport has a population of less than 4,000 people, giving it a welcoming, small-town feel. Because of its waterfront location, Kennebunkport is an active fishing and boating hub. Take a scenic boat tour to see the town from a different vantage point or, for something a little more hands-on, take a lobstering excursion and pull up a lobster trap to catch yourself some dinner.

Speaking of great food, when it’s time to eat, head to Dock Square, Kennebunkport’s town center. You’ll find restaurants serving the freshest Maine seafood, farm-to-table produce, local craft brews and whoopie pies — the official state treat of Maine. As you explore the town by car, bicycle or on foot, don’t overlook the unassuming Clam Shack, located right next to the bridge that spans the Kennebunk River. Maine’s most lauded lobster rolls are made inside this tiny white building with walk-up window service. Be sure to come hungry — each one is loaded with a whole pound of fresh lobster.
